Emergency Response Guides
These guides provide basic first-aid steps for emergency situations. In any emergency, call your local emergency number immediately.
Heart Attack
Symptoms: Chest pain, shortness of breath, pain in arms/jaw
Emergency Steps:
- Call emergency services immediately
- Have the person sit or lie down
- Loosen tight clothing
- If not allergic, give aspirin if available
- Be prepared to perform CPR if needed
Stroke
Symptoms: Face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty
Emergency Steps:
- Call emergency services immediately
- Note the time symptoms started
- Have the person lie down with head slightly elevated
- Do not give food, drink, or medication
- Monitor breathing and consciousness
Severe Bleeding
Symptoms: Heavy blood flow, pale skin, weakness
Emergency Steps:
- Apply direct pressure to the wound
- If possible, elevate the injured area
- Apply a clean bandage or cloth
- Do not remove blood-soaked bandages
- Seek medical attention immediately
Choking
Symptoms: Inability to speak, cough or breathe, blue lips
Emergency Steps:
- Perform the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts)
- Stand behind the person and wrap your arms around their waist
- Make a fist with one hand and place it above the navel
- Grab your fist with the other hand and press into the abdomen with quick, upward thrusts
- Continue until the object is expelled or emergency help arrives
Seizure
Symptoms: Uncontrolled movements, loss of consciousness
Emergency Steps:
- Do not restrain the person
- Clear the area of hazards
- Place something soft under their head
- Turn them onto their side after movements stop
- Stay with them until they are fully conscious
Severe Allergic Reaction
Symptoms: Hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness
Emergency Steps:
- Call emergency services immediately
- Use an epinephrine auto-injector (EpiPen) if available
- Have the person lie still with legs elevated
- Monitor breathing and pulse
- Perform CPR if necessary
Burns
Symptoms: Redness, pain, blisters, charred skin
Emergency Steps:
- Remove from the source of the burn
- Cool the burn with cool (not cold) running water for 10-15 minutes
- Do not apply ice, butter, or ointments
- Cover with a clean, dry cloth
- Seek medical attention for serious burns
Poisoning
Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, burns around mouth
Emergency Steps:
- Call poison control center or emergency services
- Do not induce vomiting unless instructed by professionals
- If poison is on skin, remove contaminated clothing and rinse skin
- If poison is inhaled, get to fresh air
- Bring the poison container to the hospital if possible
Fractures
Symptoms: Pain, swelling, deformity, inability to use the limb
Emergency Steps:
- Keep the injured area immobile
- Apply ice wrapped in cloth to reduce swelling
- Do not attempt to realign the bone
- For open fractures, cover wound with clean cloth
- Seek medical attention immediately
When to Call Emergency Services
Call your local emergency number (such as 911 in the US) immediately if someone:
- Is unconscious, confused, or has a seizure
- Has difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Has chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure
- Has severe bleeding
- Has severe burns
- Shows signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty)
- Has a severe allergic reaction
- Has ingested a poisonous substance
- Has a suspected fracture or spinal injury
- Shows signs of shock or severe trauma
